General Information and Care: Monocostus sp. is a wonderful medium sized plant great for an enclosure that is at least 14â tall. As with many other species in this genus, this plant has leaves come out in whorls around the stem giving a beautiful appearance in a terrarium. Additionally, as the new leaves are emerging, they are a beautiful light purple color. When mature, the leaves of this species are about 3-4â in length and 1-2.5â in width. The size will depend on the maturity of the plant. The leaves and stems are both typically a stunning dark green. Additionally, this species branches extremely easily, so as it nears the top of your tank, do not be afraid to prune it back to a manageable size. Finally, in our experience, this species does not mind having very moist to wet roots. This makes it a great candidate for a tank with a stream or a pond where the substrate is always very moist or wet.
