General Information and Care: Monolena sp. Red is one of the more colorful foliage plants that Glass Box Tropicals offers. This species may or may not be a form of Monolena primuliflora. The foliage does not match, but the flowers look very similar. Leaves of this species have lighter dark green stripes on the top of the leaf surface. The undersides are bright red which is what really can make them stand out. Additionally, the newly emerging foliage can be bright pink! The flowers are sent up on 6-10 stems and usually flower in groups of three with white flowers that have some light pink markings. The stems that hold up the flowers usually start pink or red near the caudex of the plant and near the flowers slowly fade to a more green color.
Seeds of this species seem easy to germinate, though it can take 6-10 months to get a plant that is producing true leaves. The seeds are extremely small and can almost appear to be like dust. Great care needs to be taken when trying to propagate.
