General Information and Care: Neoregelia 'Dim Sum'
Neoregelias are a type of epiphytic Bromeliad that grow all over Central and South America. They are commonly seen growing on trees, rock outcroppings, building roofs, and fence posts. Neoregelias appreciate regular waterings and medium to high humidity. However, they do appreciate drying out slightly between waterings, and they prefer not to have constant water on the leaves. Additionally, when being grown in a terrarium, it is a good idea to regularly flush out the leaves with clean water.
Neoregelias reproduce by sending pups which will typically emerge from the base of the plant. Many customers choose to allow them to grow and form a clump, while others prefer to cut them off and replant them in another area of the tank or another tank. If you choose to remove the pup, you should wait until it is at least half the size of the parent plant, preferably ¾ of the size.
Many dart frog keepers choose to have Neoregelias in their terrariums for a variety of reasons. Some frogs use Neoregelias exclusively for depositing tadpoles, while others may only lay eggs on the leaves and choose to deposit tadpoles elsewhere.
The color shown in the picture is what can be expected when these plants are grown under ideal conditions. In a terrarium environment, typically LEDs will be required in order for Neoregelias to keep their best color. The color of the actual plant that a customer receives may vary from the picture due to natural variations in growing conditions.
