General Information and Care: Vanilla planifolia 'Variegata' is a great vining orchid for terrarium culture. It is well suited to growing in warm humid environments. As a younger plant the leaves will only reach about 4-5â typically in a terrarium. In nature or a greenhouse when it is allowed to mature leaves can get quite large. The leaves are a beautiful green with white stripes in them. In a terrarium it is also rare to see this species flower which is where vanilla extract is derived from. This species tends to do best when planted in substrate and then given driftwood or a background to climb up. The aerial roots it develops will quickly grab onto anything that it can. It is common to see this growing on trees all over Central America now either though it is only native to Mexico and Guatemala.
